On top of opening up to all players, the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War beta is also getting an additional game mode. NEW 12v12 MODE - Combined Arms: Assault on Cartel, Armada, and Crossroads. The #BlackOpsColdWar Beta is OPEN on PS4! New today: On Saturday morning, the two surprised PS4 users by announcing that the Cold War beta would now be open to everyone. However, after a couple of days, Activision and Treyarch have decided to remove the "closed" part of that beta. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War deserves its hype, and hopefully campaign and Zombie modes live up to the excellence of the multiplayer we've experienced so far. This was the big weekend for the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War closed beta for PlayStation 4 owners. Fireteam combines Warzone and conventional multiplayer to brilliant effect while maps such as Armada redefine what is possible in COD's gameplay. However, the beta provides a compelling case for the game's multiplayer. The only dull map is Crossroads as it emphasizes large spaces and vehicular combat and is limited to smaller modes.īlack Ops Cold War still has a lot to prove since the campaign and Zombie modes have only been previewed. This innovation holds true of the Fireteam maps as well which, despite their scope, allow for intimate encounters. The open dunes and churning sea provide tense sniper fights while the enclosed spaces found within the aircraft carriers and caves force players into frenetic, close quarter shootouts. These maps weave various types of level design together, not only allowing for multiple flanking opportunities but for full-on separate battles, too. Cartel, Miami, and Moscow all handle like classic Call of Duty maps and are great fun, but Armada and Satellite point to real innovation for the series. The mode is brilliant with a scale that breeds chaos and objectives that demand team coordination.īlack Ops Cold Wars' biggest success, even beyond its new modes, is in its map design. There is no limit on bomb detonation either, as once all on a map are used, new ones appear, so the match goes until one team reaches 500 points. With respawns and aerial drops chaos ensues as teams battle for the right to detonate a bomb. All teams get points for uranium deposits but the bevy of points comes from detonating the uranium. In this mode, teams must find and deposit caches of uranium at certain locations and then detonate a bomb once said location is filled with uranium. The only Fireteam game available during the beta is Dirty Bomb, but it showcases Fireteam's immense potential. Fireteam involves 10 teams of four battling it out on giant, Fireteam only maps. The most notable addition to Black Ops' multiplayer is a new mode variant called Fireteam. VIP Escort plays a lot like Search and Destroy but with humans rather than bombs and makes for compelling skirmishes on intimate maps. The mode has no respawns and players must be executed in order to be killed, so it requires some tactical planning. Another new mode is VIP Escort, a mode where one team tries to escort a player to an extraction point while the other team attempts to assassinate said player. The first, Combined Arms, is a mode variant that doubles team sizes from 6 to 12 and can be applied to base modes, though only Combined Arms: Domination and Assault are currently playable. There are eight game modes on offer during the beta, but only three of them are new. Scorestreaks require high scores to unlock, those who get them deserve them, and killing multiple enemies in one life provides significant point boosts that makes the process easier. Some players expressed worry that the system, which emphasizes score over kills and carries overs after death, would reward bad players but, after spending time with the game, that is not the case. The new Black Ops Cold War scorestreak system promotes this balance without detracting from individual skill. However, like other equipment, the mic can be spotted through walls by the Engineer perk, potentially giving away their exact location. For instance, Field Mic, a new field upgrade, goes perfectly with the Paranoia perk as it allows players to cover their flank with a microphone, alerting the player to approaching enemies. Like the best Call of Duty games, perks, equipment, and streaks do an excellent job of complementing and countering one another. One area where Black Ops Cold War excels is balance.
